It's important for us at Savage to help our users understand their rifles. There are a number of reasons why someone may remove the stock from their Savage bolt action rifle. Two of the most common reasons include cleaning the firearm or adjusting the user-adjustable AccuTrigger. Follow this step by step guide on how to remove the stock from your Savage bolt action rifle.

Whenever cleaning or working on your firearm, be sure that it is fully unloaded and clear of ammunition. Safety should be your #1 concern while around firearms.

Removal Steps:

*Note: The steps listed below and video demonstrate how to remove the stock from a Savage Model 110 with a bottom bolt release. Be sure to read your owner's manual for specific instructions on your model.

  1. Place the safety in the Mid-Safe position.
  2. Remove the magazine.
  3. Open the bolt and ensure that there is no ammunition in the chamber.
  4. Close the bolt and move the safety to the Fire position.
  5. Dry fire the rifle. Be sure to leave the firearm in this condition during the removal and reinstallation of the stock.
  6. Turn the firearm over. Depress and hold the Bottom Release Button into the trigger guard as far as it will go.
  7. Using a 5/32" hex wrench, loosen and remove the action screw under the Bolt Release Button.
  8. Using a 5/32" hex wrench, loose and remove the action screw in front of the magazine well.
  9. Lift the stock off of the action.

Reinstallation Steps:

  1. Ensure that the firearm is still in the dry fired condition. If the bolt was opened for any reason with the stock off of the rifle, ensure that there is no ammunition in the chamber and close the bolt. Move the safety to the Fire position and dry fire the firearm.
  2. Position the stock over the action and ensure that the trigger and recoil lug are properly aligned into the stock.

  3. Install the shorter action screw into the location in front of the magazine well. Thread it in a small amount, but not tight.
  4. Depress and hold the Bolt Release Button into the trigger guard and install the longer action screw into the location under the button. Thread it in a small amount, but not tight.
  5. Ensure that the action is seated properly, then tighten down the front action screw to the torque noted in the chart below based on your stock type.
  6. Depress and hold the Bolt Release Button into the trigger guard and tight the rear action screw to the torque noted in the chart below based on your stock type.
  7. Turn the firearm over and open the bolt. Operate the action a few times to make sure that the bolt operates smoothly. Ensure that the three position safety still operates as it should.
