How to Cock the Bolt & Install the Rear Baffle on Model 110
The primary function of a rear baffle on a Savage Model 10/110 is to aid in primary extraction. The rear baffle also acts as a barrier from any potential gasses that may escape the chamber and get into the bolt body from the shooter’s position. But first you need to make sure the bolt is cocked. This guide will help you learn how to cock the bolt and to install the rear baffle on your Savage Model 10/110 and 12/112.
Models:
Cocked vs. De-cocked
Before you begin, it's best to confirm whether your bolt is cocked or de-cocked based on the location of the cocking piece pin. A bolt may occasionally become de-cocked during transit, which means the cocking piece pin shifts to the forward position and allows the rear baffle to come loose and/or fall off. The rear baffle can be reinstalled with the cocking piece pin in either position, however to help retain the rear baffle on the bolt, it's best to have the cocking piece pin in the cocked position.
If your bolt becomes de-cocked, it's best to re-cock the bolt first in order to install the rear baffle. Once the bolt is cocked and the rear baffle is installed, you will be able to insert the bolt into your rifle.
If your bolt becomes decocked, you will need to cock the bolt first in order to install the rear baffle. Once the bolt is cocked and the rear baffle is installed, you will be able to insert the bolt into your rifle.
How to Cock the Bolt
Using a stable surface, like the edge of a table, firmly apply leverage to move the cocking piece pin from the lower position to the upper position.
How to Install the Rear Baffle
Once the bolt is cocked, you can install the rear baffle onto the bolt.
- Align the notches on the baffle and the bolt handle
- Place baffle over the relief of the bolt and slide it rearward
- Twist until the notch is aligned and the detent pin in the baffle clicks into the channel
It is normal for there to be motion in the rear baffle as it moves and operates with the bolt function. However, if there is significant movement or comes off easily when in the correct position, please reach out to our customer service team for a new rear baffle assembly.
